Are third-party cookies dead? Discover the value of your data

By Santiago Bazarra · Apr 25, 2022 · 4 min read

For more than two decades, third-party cookies were the backbone of digital marketing: they made it possible to track user behavior across sites, personalize ads, and measure conversions with precision. But that era is ending. Safari and Firefox have blocked them by default for years, and Google Chrome has been accelerating their progressive removal. The reasons are clear: users more conscious of their privacy, increasingly strict regulations (GDPR, CCPA and their equivalents), and an industry that has lost consumer trust by overusing tracking.

The question is no longer whether third-party cookies will disappear. It's what you do when they're gone.

Why third-party cookies are becoming obsolete

Third-party cookies are files generated by domains other than the one the user is visiting, hosted on the servers of advertisers and ad networks. They allowed brands to follow users across the web to build behavioral profiles and serve personalized advertising. The problem is twofold:

  • Regulatory. The GDPR requires explicit consent to place and use cookies. Most users reject third-party cookies when given a real option to do so.
  • Technological. Browsers have decided to stop supporting them by default. Without browser support, no cookie works.

The result is that tactics built on someone else's data (cross-site retargeting, cookie-based lookalikes, external-audience DMPs) are losing reach and precision month after month.

The alternative: first-party data

First-party data is the information your company collects directly from its customers through its own channels, with their consent and for specific purposes. It's the data generated every time a user:

  • Registers on your website or app.
  • Buys in your ecommerce or physical store.
  • Opens one of your emails or clicks on a campaign.
  • Joins your loyalty program.
  • Interacts with your customer service team.

This data has three advantages over third-party cookies:

  • It's yours. You don't depend on an advertiser or a platform to access it.
  • It's more reliable. It comes from real user interactions with your brand, not from inferences made by third parties.
  • It's legal by design. Collected with consent and for a clear purpose, it complies with privacy regulations.

Why you need more than a CRM

A traditional CRM stores basic customer data (name, email, transaction history), but it isn't designed to ingest large volumes of behavioral data from web browsing, apps, social media, or the physical store, nor to activate it in real time.

This is where a Customer Data Platform (CDP) comes in: a tool specifically designed to unify all of your company's first-party data into 360 customer profiles, apply artificial intelligence, and activate those profiles across your marketing channels.

With a CDP like FLYDE you can:

  • Ingest data from any source: ecommerce, CRM, ERP, physical store, campaigns, customer service, web browsing.
  • Unify identities to know that Juan Pérez in the CRM, jperez@gmail.com in email marketing, and the anonymous visitor who browses every week are the same person.
  • Enrich profiles with behavioral, transactional, and socio-demographic data, and activate them in real time.

Even without cookies, navigation fingerprinting identifies anonymous behavioral patterns based on browser and device characteristics, without collecting personally identifiable information. A CDP can ingest that data, join it to known profiles when the user identifies themselves, and offer a complete view without depending on third-party cookies.

From acquisition to relationship

The underlying message isn't technological, it's strategic. For years, much of digital marketing was based on chasing the user around the internet with increasingly personalized ads. The end of third-party cookies forces a paradigm shift: instead of chasing, you have to attract. Instead of buying external audiences, you have to build your own. And for that, first-party data and an infrastructure that activates it are the two essential pieces.

The brands that have already started that transition are not just complying with regulation: they are building a strategic asset their competitors can't replicate.

How to get started

  • Audit the data sources you already have: what do you collect today, with what consent, and for what purpose?
  • Strengthen your owned channels: newsletters, loyalty programs, website registration, downloadable content.
  • Unify all of that data in a platform that gives you a 360 view of the customer.
  • Activate segments across your marketing channels and measure the real impact on the business, not just on clicks.
